Dog ID Laws in the UK: What Your Collar Must Include

In the UK, it's not just a good idea to have your dog wear ID — it's the law. Whether you’re heading to the park or on holiday, your dog must wear a collar or tag that clearly displays their details.

What Does the Law Require?

Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, every dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address inscribed on it — either on the collar itself or on a tag.

By law, your dog’s collar should include:

  • Your name
  • Your address (house number/name and postcode is enough)

You can also include a phone number (highly recommended for faster contact if your dog is found), but it’s not legally required.

According to The Control of Dogs Order 1992, any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address inscribed or on a tag. This is a legal requirement in England, Wales and Scotland.

Engraving vs Tags – What’s Better?

Tags fall off, jingle, and get lost. That’s why engraved collars are becoming a smarter, quieter, and safer choice. Our collars feature built-in buckles engraved with your dog’s details — no tag needed.

Important: Our collars allow up to 2 lines of engraving — so we recommend using your dog’s name and either your postcode or your phone number, depending on what you prefer. You must include the address in some form to meet UK legal standards.

Stay Legal. Stay Stylish.

All Snazzy Pooch engraved collars are designed to meet UK ID law while looking beautifully personal. Whether you choose a velvet, faux leather or adventure-ready harness, your details are engraved directly on the metal buckle.

Don’t risk a fine — or a lost pup with no ID. Explore our engraved collar collection and make sure your dog is stylish and safe every time they step out.
